CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WTVR) – An alleged criminal chose the wrong time to shoplift at Walmart in Virginia.

A man was arrested for shoplifting at a Walmart store during a “Shop with a Cop” shopping event, according to police in Chesterfield County.

The annual event pairs local agents with families in need to help them purchase Christmas gifts for their children.

On Sunday, the Walmart store was packed with people for the “Shop with a Cop” event and there were more than 50 uniformed officers in the store.

“This year we added some flair to it,” said Lt. James Lamb of the Chesterfield County Police Department.

That “flair” came when a Walmart employee approached officers at the store to tell them a shoplifting was in progress.

Several officers who were at the store for the shopping event started looking for the suspected thief.

“As we approached from several directions, he attempted to escape through the back of the store where he was apprehended,” Lamb said.

Police identified the suspect as 32-year-old Hector Velazquez Maldonado. Officers learned he was wanted for failing to appear in another shoplifting case.

“He also has other open cases in Chesterfield for theft,” Lamb said.

Maldonado was charged with grand larceny over the ‘Shop with a Cop’ incident.

Police say the collection of items he tried to steal is worth nearly $1,400.
